Working Time Records

About This Site

This site is about the duty to record working time: what is binding, what is proposed, and how to tell which a page is describing. For an example of how a commercial time-recording product presents the operational side, see time tracking software.

Who it is for

An employer in Germany or elsewhere in the EU who has been sent a compliance email and does not know whether it is accurate. Plus HR staff, works council members, and employees who want to know what must be recorded about them. For additional background from a widely used external source, see European Commission employment policy.

Who writes it

What this site is not

It is not legal advice. Every page in the obligation section says so, and it is not a formality — classification questions and works agreements need a lawyer with your facts.

This site does not sell or review time-recording products. External links are provided as references or practical examples and do not imply affiliation or endorsement.

And it does not review products. Whether a system suits your operation is a commercial decision, and the legal duty does not require one.

How claims are marked

Three categories, on every page.

Binding — a decision or a provision in force, cited by case number or section.

Proposed — a draft, named as a draft.

Asserted — a statement made by a source without a checkable basis.

The whole method is on the method page, and the distinction is what the site exists for.

About this domain

This domain previously hosted unrelated material that is not part of the current Working Time Records site. Legacy addresses may therefore redirect to the closest current explanatory page when no original equivalent remains.

Corrections

Errors are logged, with the date and what changed. In a subject where the legal position has moved several times, a page without a date is unusable — including this one, which carries its check date at the top.
